Synopsis
After Michael’s flock is stolen, he swears to have them brought back. However, dark forces are brewing pushing him over the edge. Sheep and human life quickly become blurred as the stench of vengeance rises in the idyllic Irish countryside.
Film Review
A gritty and dark film detailing the dreary chain of misfortunes after a shepherd’s flock is rustled. Stark and chillingly authentic cinematography and characters. However, the storytelling is choppy at best and feels like an unedited montage of clips with unsteady pace. Would be interested to see what the full uncut feature would have looked like.
Halfway through the film, perspective shifts to another character and we start seeing a flashback of events. However this is carried out with no necessary context or interlude indicating it’s a retelling.
Short bursts of jump scares, loud music and bloody moments keep the film begrudgingly captivating . The final crescendo is exhilarating but overdue and under-explained. The ending is pitiful and the growing the sense of justice built through the film is abandoned. There was no definite conclusion and I saw several audience members leave before the credits rolled.
Conclusion
To conclude, the film fails to build something more compelling beyond a shepherd taking revenge and amoral delinquency. I would have really like to see more twists in the story , such as Jack framing his dad because of his parents broken marriage. Or Michael receiving disturbing letters in the post each time a sheep goes missing. This in turn starts to leave him with inconsolable paranoia.
If it was on the telly, would give it a watch. But don’t think it’s worth a paid release as felt like I was watching a televised crime series. Stellar performances from all the cast but an unfortunate script.
The film struggles to define its genre and i think a few additions could have created a a compelling horror film. Especially given the frequent gore and bloody scenes.
