Signed up to the membership as was often times bored after work and was looking for something relaxing and entertaining to do. As someone who enjoys films, I decided to sign up to the Everyman membership programme and see how the experience stacked up to my local cinema. On my first visit, it is very unclear on what to do. There’s a bar on the top floor and lounge area and the actual cinema room is one flight of stairs above. However, the entrance is shared by a completely different adjacent company. At the same time, there isn’t signage or directions being given on how to go about this. As a result, first time visitors are left a little confused on what’s going on! Fortunately, I had asked the important questions before signing up to membership so didn’t have this issue.

However, at the same time nobody was checking tickets. Don’t know if this was because it was a quiet time and didn’t find this necessary. But it was a little hypocritical given the high-priced tickets, that any stranger could essentially walk-in and catch a free movie. The chairs are essentially plush sofas with cushions for extra comfort and ease. Great setting for couples and romantic flicks and a good switch-up from restrictive cubicle seating in regular cinemas. The movie screen was surprisingly small and felt like an oversized television as opposed to a cinema. It does detract a little from the cinema experience and the whole environment does feel like you’re watching your film on a sports screen or an advertising board.

Everyman has the option of ordering food that you can eat at the bar, take to your seat, or have this alternatively delivered to your seat. However, there were a few glaring issues I found with this service. Firstly, you can only order before the film starts. As a result, you can’t request extra drinks or food halfway. It would be nice if there was a short break in between the film so new orders can be made and drinks refilled if needed.Secondly, the food “stand” is a small chair panel that barley fits a popcorn box, and a drink let alone the other items on order. This is a real shame as the food was delicious, especially the margarita and cookie dough. As a result, had to use two of these to rest the food I had ordered. Thirdly, and worst of all, once the commercial ends, the lights dim, and the film starts. Which is great, until you realise eating your food is very difficult in a darkened room! It would be very easy to accidentally knock over drinks and plates and spoil your day.

Initially, as big foodie and film fanatic, Everyman combined my two favourite pastimes. I was excited to see a “luxury cinema” experience and thought it to be an ingenious idea. However, although ambitious and profitable, I feel Everyman could do more to ensure a pleasurable experience for movie-goers. For example, having foldable trays to hold food and drink and a light source to allow users to still enjoy their food whilst watching. As an Everyman member, my ticket was free, and the throwback movie included a free drink and popcorn. Paying a yearly subscription, my ticket for each film calculates to £14.99 each. However, had I purchased separately I would be paying out £18.80 for the film! Which is the equivalent of two tickets at a Vue cinema venue with snacks included!I’d want to watch more films and try out more of the food and will update my experience accordingly. Everyman is very selective of the films they run, and these are limited to a few films at my local King’s Cross branch at specific times.
