As an Artist and librarian, I've always been in interested in books with gilded spines and decorative covers. When visiting a museum, i was struck back by how beautiful and decorative a lot of antique books exhibited were. A stark contrast to the dreary and mass printed covers at modern bookstores. It made me realise how many books had lost the beautiful tradition of ornate designs.
At the same time, when speaking to fellow readers they all had trouble finding decroative objects for thier bookshelves. ​​This got me thinking. I realised that a painting in the form of a collectable book could be a really fun and quirky solution. A decorative souvenir for that empty shelf or nook. A book were you didn't have to worry about enjoying the story and would have timeless appeal. A book you could judge by the cover.

WHAT IS A ARTSMITH BOOK?
A Artsmith book is a collectible souvenir that serves as decoration for your bookshelf . Made of pinewood, each one is carved, hand-painted and designed to resemble a real book. Artsmith books have their names on the spine were they are also signed by the Artist. The cover is hand painted with a cute set of eyes attached to the front. Artsmith Books can be opened to reveal a beautiful hand painted papercraft diorama. A battery-operated light is fitted on the inside of the Artsmith book with the switch at the base. Metallic gold paper is hand cut and added to the diorama, casting a beautiful gold reflection, especially when the light is switched on.
Artsmith books also have an exclusive poem revealed by scanning the QR code on the endpaper. As a result, you can read a literary piece symbolic of the Artsmith book you own. Our Artsmith books are inspired by the ancient art of Treasure binding known for their exquisite and luxurious covers. Instead of precious gemstones and materials, we use paint and high-quality materials to create a beautiful Art piece. Harkening to a time when books would be gifted and admired for their craftmanship and aesthetic. Artsmith Books are highly collectable and make the perfect gift for any art or book enthusiast.

CREATING A CUTE COVER
Creating the original concept for Artsmith books was a quite a long and arduous journey. I was always deeply interested in handmade crafts being a Artist. Handmade and handpainted items have always seemed more sentimental and soulful then commerically printed products. Having each customer recieve a product made with passion and heart is a big part of our brand and ethos. Lots of readers are equally passionate about reading as they are about art and accessories.
Once i had a material in mind, the second course of action was giving the book a expression. There were many designs i sketched out but coulden't quite find the right one. ​​​​​​ However, after some persistence i finally got the eyes that i wanted to use. Using inspiration from literacy, i used speech marks and italics as inspiration to create the template of a cute set of eyes. ​The result was a cute cover that was both quirky and interesting.

BEAUTIFUL ON THE INSIDE AND OUTSIDE
Once i had the concept, i showed a few of my close freinds and family who were dissapointed in the book not opening. I realised that this was a oversight, and if i could have a papercraft scene on the interior it would bring more characther. As a result, i created a interior papercraft scene that would match the theme of the book. I also included a LED light so buyers could enjoy the scene day or night. I also decided to include a suprise QR code poem, so buyers can read a poem for the book they own.

TO STORY CONTINUES......
As we progress our business we have plans to increase production and introduce new designs and styles and products. We will also look to introduce other ornamental items for our audience in the future. Most importantly, we love to see creative, fun and interesting photos of our books.
